The announcement explained that translations will initially cover six languages on Android and 19+ on iPhone.

WhatsApp message Translations: How It Actually Works

Users can simply long-press any message for translate WhatsApp chats and tap “Translate” to see it in another language. On Android, you’ll also have the option to turn on automatic translation for whole chat threads so new messages in that chat will be translated automatically without needing to repeat the action.

Privacy Safeguards

WhatsApp emphasizes that all translations happen on the user’s device. This means messages are not sent to WhatsApp’s servers for translation, preserving end-to-end encryption.

The user decides which languages they want to download packs for, so translations can work even offline once language packs are downloaded.

What This Means for India

This is a game-changer for multilingual conversations. Whether chatting with family in another language or group chats with mixed participants, this removes friction. You no longer need to copy-paste into external translation tools.

It could push forward WhatsApp’s mission of keeping global communication seamless, especially in regions where people speak many languages.
