China has made history by admitting Xueba 01, a humanoid AI robot, to a four-year PhD programme at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Developed with support from Shanghai University of Science and Technology and DroidUp Robotics, the 30‑kg, 1.75‑metre robot will research Chinese opera, marking a groundbreaking step in AI and academia.

Xueba 01 has officially become the world’s first AI robot enrolled in a PhD programm. The announcement was made during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, where the robot was introduced as a doctoral candidate. Starting this September, it will study at the Shanghai Theatre Academy for four years, with a research focus on Chinese opera traditions and culture.
