Many countries are increasing their investments in AI and setting new records that continue to surprise the world. But the pace at which China is establishing its dominance in the AI and tech world is on another level. Recently, while the launch of DeepSeek shook the world.

The robot, named Xueba 01, will pursue a four-year Ph.D. doctoral course and would be a China first AI humanoid PhD Robot student. Since the news broke, it has sparked a wave of mixed reactions from people.

Xueba 01 has officially become the world’s first AI robot enrolled in a PhD programm. The announcement was made during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, where the robot was introduced as a doctoral candidate. Starting this September, it will study at the Shanghai Theatre Academy for four years, with a research focus on Chinese opera traditions and culture.

Xueba 01: A Humanoid with Human-Like Expressions

What really makes Xueba 01 stand out is how real it looks. Designed as a humanoid, it has silicone skin that gives it a life-like appearance, and it can even mimic human facial expressions. At 1.75 metres tall and weighing about 30 kilograms, it looks less like a machine and more like a student you might see on campus. This September, it’s officially set to begin its PhD, a moment that could mark a big shift in how artificial intelligence finds its place in the academic world.
