How Punjab is Using Technology for Early Detection

The Punjab government has taken a bold step to improve healthcare with smart screening tools that can catch cancer early. Launched by Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh in partnership with ACT Grants, the program is already operational in eight districts, targeting diseases that are easier to treat when found early.

By integrating technology into routine health checks, Punjab hopes to make screenings faster, safer, and more convenient, especially for people who might not otherwise visit hospitals.

The Devices at Work

  • Thermalytix by Niramai – A breast cancer screening tool that does not use radiation. Studies conducted across thousands of women showed it can reliably detect early signs of cancer, making it a safer alternative to traditional mammograms.
  • Smart Scope by Periwinkle – A portable cervical cancer screening device. Health workers can carry it to remote villages, helping women get tested without traveling far or feeling intimidated by hospitals.
  • Portable Autorefractometer by Forus Health – This eye-screening device is designed for quick check-ups at local health centers. The state plans to perform around 600 vision tests daily, helping catch eye problems early.

With these devices, Punjab expects to screen hundreds of residents every day, providing access to care that previously may have been out of reach.

Why This Matters

For many residents in rural areas, visiting a hospital for specialized tests can be difficult. By bringing AI-powered devices to local health centers, Punjab is making early detection accessible. Catching problems early can save lives, lower treatment costs, and improve outcomes.

This initiative also shows how AI, when combined with public health programs, can transform healthcare delivery in India.
