How AI Helps Crack Hit-and-Run Case in Just 36 Hours
Superintendent Harsh Poddar State That , the team deployed two AI-powered computer vision algorithms across CCTV feeds from three toll nakas (15–20 km apart).
The first filtered trucks by red markings, and the second evaluated speed patterns. That pinpointed a vehicle that ultimately led authorities to the suspect on the Gwalior–Kanpur highway, some 700 km away—an astounding feat achieved with AI’s speed and precision.
What Is MARVEL AI Sytem and Its Backstory?
This wasn’t just a one-off success. Maharashtra’s homegrown AI initiative, MARVEL (Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement), fueled the operation.
Set up in 2024 with a ₹23 crore budget, MARVEL stands as India’s first state-level police AI system—powered by collaboration between the Maharashtra Government, IIM Nagpur, and tech partner Pinaca Technologies.
The Purpose behind Marvel Creations
Far beyond routine policing, MARVEL’s vision is bold: analyze sprawling datasets—from CCTV footage to telecom metadata—to help 13-plus government departments enable smart, speed-based decision-making. Today, in minutes, AI accomplishes what could take humans days or weeks. Other states in India are now eyeing MARVEL’s model for replication.
This case marks about more than a single arrest—it heralds a new era where AI becomes law enforcement’s vigilant ally. It’s not just tech—it’s justice accelerated.
