Varanasi has taken a bold step to deal with the growing menace of illegal hoardings. The city’s Municipal Corporation has rolled out a special AI-powered vehicle supported by drones to detect and remove unauthorized billboards from public spaces.
The initiative was flagged off by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, who called it a major move towards building a cleaner and safer city.
The white electric vehicle, developed by Sky Sign, is fitted with 360-degree cameras, GPS mapping, and laser tools that scan streets during peak hours. It collects real-time data and, through a dedicated app, generates instant notices for violations.
With the support of drones, the system can also capture aerial views of illegal hoardings, helping enforcement teams act quickly.
Municipal Commissioner Akshat Verma explained that this innovation will make monitoring more effective. “Manual checks were time-consuming and often missed several violations. With this vehicle, we can cover wider areas with better accuracy,” he said.
For years, unauthorized hoardings have blocked views, cluttered streets, and even caused accidents. Earlier drives by the civic body relied heavily on staff inspections, which struggled to keep pace with the city’s growing advertising business.
The new system, linked with the Smart City Mission, promises faster enforcement and more transparency.
Residents have welcomed the move, saying it will reduce visual pollution and improve safety on busy roads. Officials believe this model could soon be adopted in other Indian cities facing similar challenges.
At the same time, experts suggest balancing enforcement with the livelihoods of small advertisers who depend on street publicity.
With this step, Varanasi has set an example of how technology can support urban governance without losing sight of its citizens’ needs.
