India is witnessing a cybercrime wave like never before—and the culprit is artificial intelligence. A new report has revealed that cybercriminals have looted ₹22,000 crore from Indians in just one year by weaponizing AI tools like deepfakes, voice cloning, and automated scam systems.

These aren’t ordinary scams. Using AI, fraudsters can now perfectly mimic the voice of a family member, generate fake video calls from known faces, and create completely believable bank or KYC alerts—all designed to manipulate and exploit the trust of online users.

“It’s not just cyber fraud anymore; it’s psychological warfare using AI,” warned a senior official from CERT-In.

Most victims are unaware they’re being duped until it’s too late. In one common scam, a cloned voice—pretending to be a relative—urgently requests a money transfer. In others, fraudsters pose as government or bank officials with AI-generated ID proofs, convincing users to share OTPs or personal details.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has urged all users to exercise extreme caution, especially during financial interactions. A new advisory is expected soon on regulating AI misuse in cybercrime.

With India’s digital economy expanding rapidly, experts believe that the ₹22,000 crore loss may just be the beginning. Unless counter-AI tools and stricter laws are implemented, such attacks will continue to evolve in scale and sophistication.
