New Delhi, June 25, 2025:
As India gears up for an unpredictable monsoon season, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled a first-of-its-kind AI-powered alert system to ensure safer travel on national highways.
The new technology will provide real-time weather and traffic updates through mobile apps, highway display boards, and digital toll systems—aiming to prevent accidents, delays, and road congestion during heavy rains.
“This is about blending AI with public safety. We want drivers to be informed, cautious, and efficient during their monsoon travel,” said a senior NHAI official.
How the System Works
AI collects and analyzes live weather feeds, radar inputs, and traffic movement patterns.
Alerts are sent instantly to drivers and logistic operators via display screens and navigation apps.
The system suggests alternate routes in case of roadblocks or flood-prone zones.
Why It Matters
India’s highways experience a surge in accidents and traffic disruptions during monsoons, often due to poor visibility, waterlogging, or landslides. With this AI-enabled infrastructure, NHAI hopes to minimize casualties and improve travel planning across 140,000+ km of national highways.
This initiative could also pave the way for smart road management, combining IoT sensors, AI, and predictive analytics.
