NEW DELHI | JUNE 22, 2025 India’s homegrown large language model, BharatGPT, is set to make a massive leap in inclusivity with a new update of BharatGPT Adds 11 Indian Dialects to Make AI Truly Local , including Awadhi, Maithili, Chhattisgarhi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, and more. The update is scheduled to roll out by August 2025, aiming to make AI accessible to millions who prefer regional languages over Hindi or English.
Developed by a consortium led by IIT Bombay and EkStep Foundation, BharatGPT has already gained traction for its performance in Hindi and standard Indian English. This expansion is expected to revolutionize how rural users, small business owners, and local governments interact with AI tools — from customer support bots to local news summarization.
Unlike global models like ChatGPT or Gemini, BharatGPT’s dialect understanding comes from datasets trained on regional literature, WhatsApp conversations, and audio samples gathered across India.
The update will also include voice-to-text features and offline functionality for low-connectivity areas — a direct nod to India’s unique tech challenges.
This step positions BharatGPT not merely as a challenger to global AI giants, but as a trailblazer in building culturally inclusive and locally grounded AI solutions.
