In a pioneering healthcare move, AIIMS Delhi has launched a pilot project for an AI-powered chatbot designed to guide patients and visitors through hospital procedures, departments, and essential services. The tool aims to reduce human dependency at help desks and streamline patient flow at one of India’s busiest government hospitals.
The AI chatbot, accessible via WhatsApp and the AIIMS mobile app, can answer queries about OPD timings, doctor availability, appointment booking, lab test schedules, and even real-time queue updates. It supports English and Hindi, with future versions expected to include regional languages like Punjabi and Bengali.
Developed in collaboration with a Delhi-based healthtech innovator, the chatbot is powered by advanced language models that enable it to understand user queries in context and respond with precision, using a blend of natural language understanding and adaptive learning techniques. It also includes emergency service shortcuts and directions to key hospital zones like pharmacy, emergency, and billing.
AIIMS officials say the system is already handling over 5,000 queries daily with 92% accuracy. If successful, this AI solution could be replicated in other AIIMS centers and state hospitals across India, transforming how patients access care in the public sector.
