In a first-of-its-kind move, Delhi is set to introduce an AI-powered “virtual judge” to handle minor traffic violations starting July 2025. The initiative, spearheaded by the Delhi High Court and backed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, is designed to reduce case backlog and enhance efficiency in the judicial system.
The AI system, trained on lakhs of past case files and judgments, will handle non-contestable traffic violations such as speeding and signal jumping. Users can digitally contest or pay fines via an online interface, and AI will process cases in under a minute, based on pre-fed legal protocols.
Experts caution that while automation brings speed and transparency, ethical oversight and accountability remain crucial. The AI system will not replace human judges for complex or appealable cases, serving purely as a first-line judicial assistant.
This landmark step could transform India’s legal tech ecosystem, putting it on par with countries like China and Estonia, where AI-judiciary tools are already in use.
